what blog software?

This is a new page intended to explore some of the more practical sides of blogging in schools, the implementation issues including what blogging platform is best for an educational context.
Owned now by Google, blogger is the industry easy start to blogging application. Many schools don’t like the almost immovable navigation toobar at the top, which can lead you and your students anywhere! I’ve used blogger since 2001 and it’s been reliable throughout. The search engine doesn’t work well I’ve found. My original teaching and learning blog was on blogger.
Word Press
Edublogs runs on a WordPress engine, and there are some great features, including the ability to post pages like this as well as posts. About says: This free blog software is b2/cafelog’s official successor. It has a great interface and useful features like ‘private’ posting (password-protected), file uploads, and more. You need PHP version 4.1 or greater, MySQL version 3.23.23 or greater, and The Apache mod_rewrite module (optional, for the nice URI functions) on your server.
Movable Type.
I haven’t used this. About says: ‘This is a popular blog software among bloggers who like to manipulate web designs, formats, and functions. However, you need to have some programming skills (or pay for an installation service) and your own web host. While there is a free blog version, some bloggers might find the licensing agreement with this too limiting. For more flexibility, there are several licensing fee options for both personal and commercial users.’
Vox is a new lite and friendly blogging applicaton from the people who make Movable Type, Live Journal and Typepad. Still currently in limited beta release.
If you want a graduated start to classroom blogging for your students, this might be the best choice, a site especially designed for school blogging, with extra security.
